Mike Terry Is Still Alive
Hello fellow alums.
I was a camper back when muck mouth was a real impedement to flirting at free swim. I somehow managed to avoid to avoid stepping on a clam shell until John Gulick and I did it simultaniously during Grunt week 1995. I read on Blue Gums posting, that he thinks someone else tells his story better. Well that may be true, but I am pretty sure that I have come the closest to actually catching children on fire with my special "White Gas Finale."
I made the trasition to staff in 1994. I've got to say it was an interesting experience leading the sailing outrip with campers less than a year younger than me. I also taught sailing for that year and the two after that. I was one half of the team, along with Mary Peyton Swan, that almost lost all of the campers on our trip before we left camp, when a gale blew up on the river in what I think was 1995.
I know that I just listed two instances where my actions could have shut down Chanco, and even though I can assure you that there were others, I was still a pretty descent staff member.
Anyway, I now live in Falls Church, Virginia. I do very exciting work that involves full day sessions of manipulating Excel spreadsheets. If any of you old Chanco peolpe are up here, even if we didn't actually wind up at chanco at the same time, I'd love to hear from you. Maybe we could catch up for a beer, and exchange stories. We've all got them.
The other half..
Mike, I believe that the big gale was in 1994, as that was my last year as a counselor. And in our defense, it wasn't like we could look up the weather forcast back then before we went out! And it was a gorgeous day before we left the beach, or that's how I'm remembering it!
Do you remember that Charlie started calling you "Fetch-It", because I had you running all over camp getting stuff so I could work on the boats!?
Glad to hear you are doing well playing with spreadsheets! I'm teaching EMT-basic classes and running as a paramedic/firefighter in Hanover, VA when I'm not home with my 4 year old, Isaac.
Talk to ya later!
